Mechanical Engineering:
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of
engineering. It is also referred to as the ‘mother’ branch of engineering.
Another appealing feature of mechanical engineering is that the application
base of this field of study is extremely broad and diverse. Almost all
inventions during the ancient period and a vast majority in the modern era are
direct contributions of one or the other application of mechanics.
Mechanical Engineering is the mother of all branches. The
contribution of this branch is enormous in the growth of technology over the
centuries. The scope of the course varies from material research to machinery
development, Nano Technology, Smart materials, Aerospace Technology, Missiles
technology, CAD/CAM, FMS, CIM, Automation and such other interrelated
developments.
The job opportunities are in aero space, Automotive and
Manufacturing sectors apart from research establishments. Many firms developing
software packages for mechanical components and products are also recruiting
the mechanical engineers. The skills needed for this course are strong
computational mathematics, creativity and analytical abilities. The areas of
study includes Manufacturing processes, Mechanical vibrations, Mechatronics,
Heat and Mass Transfer, Tool Engineering and Design, Design of machine
elements, Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Robotics.
Job Prospect:
Mechanical engineering is the broadest of all engineering
fields, the job prospects on offer for skilled mechanical engineers are aplenty
and unending. Mechanical engineers are required to design, test, manufacture,
install, operate and maintain a wide array of machines and mechanical systems
that are used in countless industries. These professionals can find employment
both in the government and private sector undertakings.
Major industries that employ mechanical engineers include
automobiles, space research, aeronautical, energy and utilities, air
conditioning, bio-mechanical industry. Other major employers include giant
manufacturing plants, air conditioning and refrigeration industry, turbine
manufacturing plants, oil and gas exploration and refining industries and the
agricultural sector.
In the government sector, mechanical engineers can provide
their knowledge to various government run projects in the role of technical
experts and consultants. They can also work in private engineering companies
that provide technical consultancy to both government and corporate firms.
These engineers can also hold high managerial positions in
government as well as private sector organizations according to their field of
expertise and educational qualifications.
Department:
The Department of Chemical Engineering has been started in
the year 1982 to meet requirements of the emerging Chemical and its allied
disciplines in consultation with various stakeholders.
The Bachelor of Engineering program in Chemical Engineering
is autonomous program associated to Visvesvaraya Technological University,
Belgaum.
The department has been recognized as a research center by
Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum from 2002 and several faculties
are pursuing their doctoral degree in
the center. The National Board of Accreditation has accredited the department
twice for 5 years since 2003. We also offer a post graduate program M. Tech in
chemical engineering since 2012 with an intake of 18.
The department has well qualified, dedicated and experienced
faculty and technical staff. The faculty student ratio is 1:11. There are 5
faculties who have completed their PhD and all others are pursuing PhD. The
faculty is assisted by well trained supporting staff.
Vision:
Imparting quality education in Chemical Engineering to
promote leadership in Research, Innovation and Sustainable Technologies through
teamwork.
Mission:
- Deliver quality education in basic and applied areas of Chemical Engineering.
- Enable students and faculty to achieve proficiency in Chemical Engineering through state-of-the-art laboratories.
- Encourage faculty and students to make career in research through developing innovative processes and products.
- Develop technologies with a focus on sustainability.
- Collaborate with industries and research institutes.
- Inculcate leadership qualities, entrepreneurial skills, societal and ethical values.
Placements:
Chemical Engineering students have an advantage of getting
placed in IT companies and also core companies. The students are placed in IT
giants like Infosys, Accenture, CTS, Wipro, Fidelity, Quest, Sapient and Tech
Mahindra. Core companies visiting the
