Civil Engineering:
Civil Engineering is all about creating, improving and
protecting the environment in which we live. It provides the facilities for
day-to-day life such as transport, and the infrastructure allowing industry to
prosper. Civil engineers plan, design and oversee construction and maintenance
of building structures and facilities, such as roads, railways, airports,
bridges, harbours, dams, irrigation projects, power plants, and water and
sewage systems. They also design large structures, like the Aviva Stadium, to withstand
both the ravages of time and the elements.
Civil engineering is one of the most traditional engineering
studies in India. British started very good schools for civil engineering
studies and successfully completed some of the best public projects like Ganga
canal and India’s Railway network to name few.
In the first year of study students will learn about the
basic engineering techniques along with mathematics and engineering design.
From second year students will be more focused towards core subject studies.
Few of the subjects taught in these four years are Fluid Mechanics, Soil
Mechanics, Design of Structures, and Structural Mechanics and water recourse
engineering.
Students are also partly exposed to subjects like
Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources
Engineering, Remote Sensing, Transportation Systems Engineering..etc.
Job Prospects of a Civil Engineer:
Civil Engineers can find job in Government departments,
private and public sector industries, research and teaching institutions etc.
Job opportunities for civil engineers are expected to increase as fast as the
average for all jobs, although the construction industry is vulnerable to
fluctuations in the economy. Civil engineers will always be needed to maintain and
repair existing facilities and structures and to construct new ones. After
doing B.Tech, one can look for jobs in road projects, building work,
consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or housing societies. The
experts say there is a high demand for experienced civil engineers in developed
countries.
Civil engineers are employed in all the major construction
projects carried out by the state or central government, the railways, private
construction companies, military, engineering services, consultancy services
etc. Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up
teaching or they can open their own independent consultancy services.
There are equally good opportunities in the private sector
for civil engineers. A major opening for qualified civil engineers is also in
armed forces where they can make vital contribution to the protection of the
country. Last but not the least you can set up your own engineering
consultancy.
Course Description:
MSRIT offers full time undergraduate programe B.Tech in
Civil Engineering. Course duration is four years, divided into 8 semesters.
Imparts practical and theoretical knowledge of design,
construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment
and its related field
Department Profile:
The Civil Engineering Department was started in the year
1971. Post graduate program M Tech in Structural Engineering was started in the
year 1984. Another milestone was achieved in the year 1994; the department was
recognized as Research Center. Over four decades the department has carved its
niche in the areas of academics, research, consultancy, collaborative projects,
and publications.
The department was awarded distinction of 5 years of
accreditation by NBA when it was evaluated for third time. Over 12 research
scholars have been awarded Ph D degree and more than 18 research scholars are
pursuing Ph D and M Sc degree in Engineering. Over 250 technical papers in the
reputed journals and conferences are the outcome of active research of the
department.
The Department holds a patent for Total Replacement of Sand
in Concrete by Pond Ash (Patent No 244063). The department has been actively
involved in conducting conferences, workshops, FDP’s, Site Visits, Project
Tours and several students related programs (SAMEEKSHA) to provide a platform
for sharing and spreading the latest developments in the field of Civil
Engineering.
The Department also encourages its students to engage in
extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, Special / Invited Lectures,
Seminars, Technical Festivals and Nation and International Conference, Annual
Alumni Meets, thus ensuring the overall development, nurturing of team spirit
and organizational skills.

M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology was created in 1962 by
the late Dr. M.S. Ramaiah, our Founder Chairman who was a renowned visionary,
philanthropist, and a pioneer in creating several landmark infrastructure
projects in India. Noticing the shortage of talented engineering professionals
required to build a modern India.
Dr. M.S. Ramaiah predicts MSRIT as an institute of
excellence imparting quality and affordable education. Part of Gokula Education
Foundation, MSRIT has grown over the years with significant contributions from
various professionals in different capacities.
