Mechanical Engineering:
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of
engineering. It is also referred to as the ‘mother’ branch of engineering.
Another appealing feature of mechanical engineering is that the application
base of this field of study is extremely broad and diverse. Almost all
inventions during the ancient period and a vast majority in the modern era are
direct contributions of one or the other application of mechanics.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the major activities in the
engineering profession and its principles are involved in the design, study,
development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems.
Continued research and development have led to better machines and processes
helping the mankind.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is as
old as the Institute itself. Its impact on the Institute and on society is
easily demonstrated by noting the alignment of the department's evolution with
key events and technological advances in the India and elsewhere. Today, the
department of mechanical engineering of IIT Madras attracts and features an
extraordinary rich diversity and quantity of talented individuals, with nearly
700 undergraduates, 500 graduate students and over 60 faculty members. The
impressive array of students makes the department as the largest in the country
and one of the largest in Asia.
Job Prospects of Mechanical Engineer:
Mechanical Engineering finds applications in all fields of
technology. They could work in many industries including private or public
sector industries of various types, and their work varies by industry and
function. With the rapid rate of expansion in the industrial sector, the
employment potential for mechanical engineers is very high.
In the government sector, fresher’s could join as Junior
Engineers and go up the ladder as Assistant Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineers, Executive
Engineers, Superintendent Engineers and so on.
Mechanical engineers are required in automobile, chemical,
electronics, steel plants, oil exploration and refining, technical wings of
armed forces, space research organization, etc.
Candidates with post graduate degree or an additional management degree
could find work in administrative and managerial positions in government
departments or public and private sector industries or do research as well as
teaching in Research and teaching institutes. They could also opt for technical
sales / marketing or work as independent consultants.
Mechanical Engineering graduates have several job
opportunities in Marine engineering. After undergoing a basic pre sea training
or studying marine engineering or nautical science course, they can join as
engine cadets, marine engineers or navigating officers. Mechanical Engineering
graduates can also opt for M.E/ M.Tech programs in Marine engineering,
Petroleum engineering, Aerospace/ Aeronautical engineering or Nanotechnology.
Department Profile:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was come into
existence in the year 1962 with an intake of 40 students. The department has
grown strong over the last 52 years and today has an intake of 180 students and
48 teaching staff. All the faculty members are well qualified and possess post
graduate degree with 20 doctorates.
The department offers four year degree course and also
offers two Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Science & Engineering and
Computer Integrated Manufacturing, with an intake of 18 each. The Department
also offers research program which includes MSc Engineering by research and PhD
degree from VTU and at present 24 researchers are pursuing PhD. The department
received software grants from Autodesk a leading Computer Aided Design
multinational company and has been using them in the curriculum.
The faculty members have taken up number of research
projects funded by external agencies like DRDO, DST, AICTE and VTU and received
funding to the tune of 1 Crore. In view of the golden jubilee celebrations, the
department has conducted a national level project exhibition and an
International Conference on “Challenges and Opportunities in Mechanical
Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management Studies” – ICCOMIM. Faculty
members from the department have published books on different domains of
Mechanical Engineering and are recommended by VTU Board of Studies as reference
text books.
