Civil Engineering:
Civil Engineering is the key to many of the issues affecting
our lives today. Civil engineers solve problems, design, build and maintain our
living and working spaces. You might design a new stadium, work on a local
by-pass or railway line, assess a damaged structure, provide immediate and safe
drinking water to a refugee camp, or manage a multi-million pound construction
project.
Civil Engineering is a prominent and oldest branch of
engineering which deals with buildings, bridges, roads, flyovers, railways,
water supply, sanitary, development of townships and other infrastructural
development. Due to liberalization policy of the government, many
infrastructure projects like golden quadrilateral, National highway
constructions and transport sector development are the need of the hour. Many
multinationals are engaged in the infrastructure developmental activities.
The job opportunities are in civil engineering fields and
software companies. Analytical and logical abilities and liking for the
profession are the essential requirements. Subjects on concrete technology,
transport engineering, water supply and sanitary engineering, geotechnical
engineering, fluid mechanics and machinery, structural mechanics, hydrology and
water resources, irrigation engineering are studied in this course.
As a civil engineer, you will have to plan out, design and
supervise the construction of different types of buildings. You need to posses
good knowledge of mathematics and science. Also, you must also have good
supervisory and administrative skills.
Job Prospects of a Civil Engineer:
Civil Engineers can find job in Government departments,
private and public sector industries, research and teaching institutions etc.
Job opportunities for civil engineers are expected to increase as fast as the
average for all jobs, although the construction industry is vulnerable to
fluctuations in the economy. Civil engineers will always be needed to maintain
and repair existing facilities and structures and to construct new ones. After
doing B.Tech, one can look for jobs in road projects, building work,
consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or housing societies. The
experts say there is a high demand for experienced civil engineers in developed
countries.
Civil engineers are employed in all the major construction
projects carried out by the state or central government, the railways, private
construction companies, military, engineering services, consultancy services
etc. Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up
teaching or they can open their own independent consultancy services.
There are equally good opportunities in the private sector
for civil engineers. A major opening for qualified civil engineers is also in
armed forces where they can make vital contribution to the protection of the
country. Last but not the least you can set up your own engineering
consultancy.
