Mechanical Engineering:
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of
engineering. It is also referred to as the ‘mother’ branch of engineering.
Another appealing feature of mechanical engineering is that the application
base of this field of study is extremely broad and diverse. Almost all
inventions during the ancient period and a vast majority in the modern era are
direct contributions of one or the other application of mechanics.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the major activities in the
engineering profession and its principles are involved in the design, study,
development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems.
Continued research and development have led to better machines and processes
helping the mankind.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is as
old as the Institute itself. Its impact on the Institute and on society is
easily demonstrated by noting the alignment of the department's evolution with
key events and technological advances in the India and elsewhere. Today, the
department of mechanical engineering of IIT Madras attracts and features an
extraordinary rich diversity and quantity of talented individuals, with nearly
700 undergraduates, 500 graduate students and over 60 faculty members. The
impressive array of students makes the department as the largest in the country
and one of the largest in Asia.
Job Prospects of Mechanical Engineer:
Mechanical Engineering finds applications in all fields of
technology. They could work in many industries including private or public
sector industries of various types, and their work varies by industry and
function. With the rapid rate of expansion in the industrial sector, the
employment potential for mechanical engineers is very high.
In the government sector, fresher’s could join as Junior
Engineers and go up the ladder as Assistant Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineers, Executive
Engineers, Superintendent Engineers and so on.
Mechanical engineers are required in automobile, chemical,
electronics, steel plants, oil exploration and refining, technical wings of
armed forces, space research organization, etc.
Candidates with post graduate degree or an additional management degree
could find work in administrative and managerial positions in government
departments or public and private sector industries or do research as well as
teaching in Research and teaching institutes. They could also opt for technical
sales / marketing or work as independent consultants.
Mechanical Engineering graduates have several job opportunities
in Marine engineering. After undergoing a basic pre sea training or studying
marine engineering or nautical science course, they can join as engine cadets,
marine engineers or navigating officers. Mechanical Engineering graduates can
also opt for M.E/ M.Tech programs in Marine engineering, Petroleum engineering,
Aerospace/ Aeronautical engineering or Nanotechnology.
Department Profile:
Department of Mechanical Engineering started the Under
Graduate program in the year 1946 with an intake of 60 which increased to 100
in 2001 and to 120 in the year 2006 and 180 in the year 2014. The Post Graduate program was started in the
year 1986 in Machine Design with 18 students. Another Post Graduate program in the field of
Manufacturing Science and Engineering has been started in the year 2014. The
department is recognized as a research centre by VTU.
The department is adequately funded by various government
bodies and supported by industries. A research grant to the tune of 700 lakhs
is funded to the department by various agencies like DST, AICTE, DRDO,
AR&DB etc.
The department has good number of MOUs with various sectors of
industry ranging from automotive to manufacturing domains. Various societies
like SAE, FPSI, and ASHRAE etc. have their student chapters in the campus
bridging the gap between industry and academia. Industrial training, bridge
courses are conducted periodically in the department for industries such as
Scania Commercial vehicles India Pvt. Ltd, FPSI etc. Department of Mechanical
Engineering is accredited by NBA for 5 years on the basis of Washington accord.
