Chemical Engineering:
Chemical engineering is all about turning raw materials into
useful, everyday products. The clothes we wear, the food and drink we consume
and the energy we use all depend upon chemical engineering. Chemical engineers
work out the processes to make all these products, while also helping to manage
the world's resources, protect the environment and ensure health and safety
standards are met.
Chemical engineering is a discipline influencing numerous
areas of technology. In broad terms, chemical engineers conceive and design
processes to produce, transform and transport materials — beginning with
experimentation in the laboratory followed by implementation of the technology
in full-scale production.
Chemical engineers bridge sciences and manufacturing by
applying the principles of science and engineering, especially chemistry,
physics, biochemistry, applied mathematics, and mechanical and electrical
engineering, to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals. In
so doing, they create and improve upon products and processes.
Skills required for success in this field include the
following:
- Active learning
- Communication skills
- Computer skills
- Critical thinking
- Higher education
- Knowledge of up-to-date practices
- Operation monitoring
- Operations analysis
- Teamwork skills
- Testing
Career Prospects of a Chemical Engineer:
Chemical engineers are in great demand because of the large
number of industries that depend on the synthesis and processing of chemicals
and materials. In addition to traditional careers in the chemical, energy and
oil industries, chemical engineers enjoy increasing opportunities in
biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electronic device fabrication and environmental
engineering. The unique training of the chemical engineer becomes essential in
these areas when processes involve the chemical or physical transformation of
matter.
Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry,
biology, physics, and math to solve problems that involve the production or use
of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other products. They design processes
and equipment for large-scale safe and sustainable manufacturing, plan and test
methods of manufacturing products and treating by products, and supervise
production.

Department Profile:
The Department of Chemical Engineering has been established
in the year 1982 to meet requirements of the emerging Chemical and its allied
disciplines in consultation with various stakeholders. The Bachelor of
Engineering program in Chemical Engineering is autonomous program affiliated to
Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
The department has been recognized as a research center by
Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum from 2002 and several faculties
are pursuing their doctoral degree in the centre. The National Board of
Accreditation has accredited the department twice for 5 years since 2003. We
also offer a post graduate program M. Tech in chemical engineering since 2012
with an intake of 18.
The department has well qualified, dedicated and experienced
faculty and technical staff. The faculty student ratio is 1:11. There are 5
faculties who have completed their PhD and all others are pursuing PhD. The
faculty is assisted by well trained supporting staff.
