Chemical Engineering:
Chemical engineering basically is applied chemistry. It is
the branch of engineering concerned with the design, construction, and
operation of machines and plants that perform chemical reactions to solve
practical problems or make useful products.
Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that applies
physical sciences (e.g. chemistry and physics) and life sciences (e.g. biology,
microbiology and biochemistry) together with mathematics and economics to
produce, transform, transport, and properly use chemicals, materials and
energy.
Chemical engineering essentially deals with the engineering
of chemicals, energy and the processes that create and/or convert them. Modern
chemical engineers are concerned with processes that convert raw materials or
chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. They are also concerned with
pioneering valuable materials and related techniques – which are often
essential to related fields such as nanotechnology, fuel cells and
bioengineering.
Career Prospects of a Chemical Engineer:
Chemical engineers design the equipment and processes that
are used for manufacturing some types of products. Food, fuel, drugs, paper,
plastics, and chemicals are some of the most common products that chemical
engineers design processes for.
Designing a chemical manufacturing process requires a strong
background in mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, and mechanical
engineering, so chemical engineers need to have a diverse academic background.
Chemical engineers can specialize in other areas, as well.
For example, some focus on developing certain types of products (like aluminum
cans). Others focus on particular processes, like making plastics
(polymerization) or burning chemicals to create other chemicals (oxidation).
Since chemical engineering is such a broad field, there are many opportunities
for specialization.
