BIT, Mesra is a "Deemed University" under Sec. 3 of the U.G.C. Act 1956. The Board of Governors is responsible for the main functions and overall supervision of activities. It comprises representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri G.P. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors while the Governor of the state of Jharkhand officiates as the Institute's Chancellor. There's a Technical Council that decides the academic policy of the Institute.
BIT Mesra has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) & the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) established by the UGC & AICTE respectively.

Based on Overall AIR in AIEEE 2010 conducted by CBSE, and Central Counselling conducted by Central Counselling Board (CCB) 2010. Candidates must appear in AIEEE 2010 and qualify for Central Counselling. For details about AIEEE candidates are advised to visit the AIEEE website at www.aieee.nic.in and for details about Central Counselling they should visit the CCB website at www.ccb.nic.in.

- Maximum age limit for admission is 21 years as on 01.10.2010 (26 years for SC/ST candidates)
- Candidates must have passed in English, Physics, Mathematics and other 2 subjects as per AIEEE norms in Class 12 / equivalent qualifying examination (QE), with minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks. Marks in Class 12 to be computed as average of best 5 subjects including English, Physics, Mathematics and other 2 subjects as per AIEEE norms.
