Machine Design:
Machine design is the process of engineering design. A
machine is made up of mechanisms that work together to satisfy the requirements
of what the machine needs to accomplish.
Machine Design involves the analysis of static and dynamic
forces to design machine elements to meet strength, safety, reliability and
cost specifications. The program focuses on design of mechanisms and components
using analytical, numerical and experimental approaches. It aims to provide
knowledge of behavior of materials and systems in both elastic and plastic
ranges, failure modes and mechanisms in both static and dynamic conditions.
Machine Design is one of the important branches of
Engineering Design. To understand what exactly machine design or mechanical
design is let us consider the example of the gear box of the car. The gear box
transmits the motion and the power of the engine to the wheels of the vehicle.
The gearbox comprises group of gears which are subjected to not only motion but
also the load of the vehicle. For the gears to run at desired speeds and take
desired loads it is important that they should be designed.
During designing
various calculations are performed considering desired speeds and loads and
finally the gear of particular material and specific dimensions that can take
all loads and that can be manufactured at least possible cost giving optimum
performance is designed.
Job Prospects of a Machine Design Engineer:
Machine design engineers are those professionals that
perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools, engines, machines,
and other mechanically functioning equipment. The Machine design engineers also
oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of such equipment as
centralized heat, gas, water, and steam systems.
A job as a Machine Design Engineer falls under the broader
career category of Mechanical Engineers. The information on this page will
generally apply to all careers in this category.

Eligibility Criteria:
Admission to M.Tech – Design course shall be open to
candidates who have passed the Bachelor’s Degree examinations with not less
than 50% marks in the aggregate of all the semesters of the degree examinations
(45% for SC/ST candidates belonging to Karnataka). The candidate shall have
passed Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering / Automobile Engineering or
an equivalent degree.
In addition, the candidate must have also taken at least one
of the following entrance exams: GATE: ME, AMIE in appropriate branch or PGCET.
Admission Procedure:
Students are admitted to undergraduate courses on basis of
their merit in the Karnataka CET test, or in the COMED-K undergraduate test.
Students are also admitted through a Management quota, which does not place
merit requirements. There is a lateral entry scheme in place, by which students
holding diploma degrees can enter directly to the second year of study in
engineering. Students, upon graduating, receive a Bachelor of Engineering or a
Bachelor of Architecture degree.Students are admitted to postgraduate courses
on basis of their GATE test scores, as well as on their Post Graduate Karnataka
CET scores.
